Anne Helen Petersen writes some of the smartest celebrity commentary around, but her relatively secure and well-paid job at BuzzFeed, which headhunted her from academia (her PhD was on the history of celebrity gossip), enables her much more time to research than lots of 'pop culture journalists' are resourced to do.

To me it's a great profile because it attempts to take the reader inside the celebrity machine to experience what it's like to try to live a human life in there.'
